What is psychotherapy?

Therapy is a way for clients who are having problems that they cannot handle,  cannot control,  or just do not know how to deal with,  to find help from a trained professional.  A person goes to a therapist because he / she cannot find the answers to a problem.  A therapist will listen to the problem and ask probing questions to get at a deeper level of what is going on.  The therapist will then either explore with the client ways that he could change his thinking about the issue or teach him skills so that the client can correct this concern on his own.

What is a the difference between counseling and psychotherapy?

The words counseling,  therapy,  and psychotherapy can be used interchangeably.  The terms are used to discuss psychological types of counseling and therapy.

How can psychotherapy help me?

Therapy can help alleviate emotional pain and suffering.  It can teach the client new skills with which he can successfully deal with the problems at hand.  It can give the client hope that there is a better way.  The one thing it cannot do is change the client.  The client has to do that by himself.  The client has to take the skills or new ideas and put them into practice in his life.  It is said that unless clients take what they have learned and put it into practice out in the world,  therapy will not do any good.

How long does a psychotherapist work with an individual?

The length of the therapeutic relationship varies from client to client.  When it is time to terminate,  the client will notice that most of the concerns and anxiety that brought him into therapy will have dissipated. The client will have learned coping skills and new behaviors to deal with issues that may persist.  The therapist should be able to give the client feedback about his progress and discuss whether or not the client feels ready to terminate.  Ultimately the decision is in the client’s hands.
